Managers were too interested in reaching targets

Managers were too interested in reaching targets

During our series of questioning so-called ‘Gen Z students’ on their views and thoughts about management and leadership in a working environment, we asked a 19-year-old a set of questions about his previous employment experience within the hospitality sector as a waiter for a large, publicly owned business.

The following answers to such questions clearly show that this particular student felt that this was a low-paid, unfulfilling job and consequently did not want to maintain his position within the company.

How did you feel about the leadership?

There was poor leadership as managers were too interested in reaching targets (total sales), rather than ensuring a good quality of service.

How did you feel about the work you did?

There was quite a varied work load, some was very dull (eg. polishing cutlery) and some was more interesting (eg. serving customers).

Would you have recommended people to work there?

No I would not because the job is low paid compared to similar roles within different companies.

Did you trust the company?

Yes.

Did you feel the company cared about you?

No, as there was a big turn over of staff as people were regularly leaving within a few weeks of work.

What kept you motivated while you were there?

The money.

How did it make you feel? Or if you weren’t particularly motivated there why was that, how did that make you feel?

I wasn’t motivated at all because the pay was low and the fact that it was only a part time job meant that I had no interest in trying to excel and build a career there.

What made you leave?

The pay and my work load balance.
